Great stuff in here. At the moment I am listening to Dream Theater's and Thrice's new albums. I know most of you will probably won't be much into prog metal, so here is something off the new Thrice album. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wxNhpWt9oI Also you guys should check out this band from Malibu, CA. called Dawes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQEj_9IhJSo Manchester Orchestra? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4orCW0rKuAo Colour Revolt http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQqB4ri5_5c Something extra... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQEj_9IhJSo Ok, got a little carried away, enough for now.
Thought I'd share this little jewel I found the other day. Really beautiful. Admiral Fallow - Four Bulbs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qs8TvLgPTWo&feature=related
Dog & Panther... Here's a link to a 'making of' they did for their song "Giant Hands". I think it's interesting to see behind the scenes stuff and how different people approach recording: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gYe4twqz2Q&feature=youtu.be (To skip the intro, fast forward to 6:00 for just the song.) For just audio, an album can be heard here: http://dogandpanther.bandcamp.com/album/what-happened
Any love for Florence & The Machine? I love big-sounding music. Arcade Fire filled that role in 2010, and now Flo's new album is doing the same for 2011.
I recently found out about Mimicking Birds, a band under Isaac Brock's label and as I'm a huge Modest Mouse fan I had to check them out and... wow. See for yourself:
On the same note this is another song by them. I cannot stop listening. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viN41AnA0uc
The overall vibe of this song/video reminds me of Radical Face. Somewhat creepy and very sad early Americana. The build towards the end is so intense. I love it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oiEqWYawpeU&ob=av2e
I'll throw some out that I've listened to in the past 3 days. Oh No! Oh My! The Spinto Band Pedro The Lion Tallest Man On Earth Joy Division Her Space Holiday I could keep going on but I'll cut this short.
These guys opened for Radical Face last night. Really enjoyed their stuff. http://soundcloud.com/paleseas
Oh God I could go on forever in this thread. I'm a really huge fan of the Arcade Fire. Out of every band I think they've influenced me the most. I don't know what growing up would have been like without them. Also I'm glad you guys like Explosions in the Sky. I actually met them out of nowhere in a small skate shop here in North Carolina. It was so strange and unexpected, but definitely a nice surprise! I saw that someone had mentioned Manchester Orchestra. I'm not to in to that band, but I really like his acoustic solo project that Andy Hull did titled "Right Away, Great Captain." His voice reminds me a lot of Ben's. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omDQWh1iFi8 This is also incredibly good. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iv6q8OOVcg0 Pree needs more fans! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_clHtFDXaI Also, this band that definitely deserves more attention. The Antlers' "Hospice" album is one of the most moving albums of all time in my opinion. Simple and beautiful. Listen to the whole album to get the full effect. Other recommendations would be Andrew Bird, Brooke Waggoner, Blackbird Blackbird, Dear and the Headlights, Elvis Perkins, Fun, Karen O and the Kids, Marble Sounds, The Middle East, Of Monsters and Men, Okkervil River, Rogue Wave, Stars, Sunset Rubdown, Thao with the Get Down Stay Down, Throw me the Statue, and Wild Sweet Orange.
Wow, another Brooke Waggoner fan! Much like Ben, she tends to avoid the whole label/record company nonsense and therefore goes relatively unnoticed. I'm surprised to see her mentioned. I actually found Brooke and Radical Face around the same time and tend to lump them together. Arcade Fire is also a staple and I always include them among my favorite bands. Saw them in 2007 and 2010 -- they are amazing live!
I could go on and on and on, but here's a few that pop into my mind from recent listenings Matthew Good / Matthew Good Band -A canadian rock artist whose emotional and stirring vocals hide well the fact that all he really wants to be is an high school history teacher http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sdJdjH18RU - My personal favorite song of his, While We Were Hunting Rabbits. 8-minute song warning! For something more accessible, check out his song, Giant, or also Strange Days. Shawn Colvin -Probably my favorite female artist, it's hard to beat a beautiful woman with a powerful voice, great range, amazing songwriting abilities and an emotionally accessible array of songs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDpHggDfxQs&ob=av2n - Again, a personal favorite. Diamond In The Rough doesn't show off her vocal range or sheer lung power as well as some, but it's a gorgeous song with great lyrics and catchy sound. Pleasantly artsy video. Bell X1 -Barely even on the US music radar, these guys have some excellent songs. Flame and The Great Defector are both popular, though again not breaking the surface much in the US. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U41Z79wsNq8 - This song stands so far above their other work to me that it's hardly in the same category. Listen for the wonderfully subtle transition at 1:38-1:43 It's extraordinarily difficult to not just go on forever just chewing through my 50,000 song library, but I hope these were an enjoyable snack KB
Astronautalis - The Wondersmith and His Son The first one is Astronautalis who is a close friend of Ben's. This song is what got me in to Astro and through that found Ben's music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aE8FECzFVn8 Daughter - Candles Next is a song that I've been listening to a lot lately. I listened to it yesterday for the first time properly at dusk standing on the big bridge in Oxford looking out at the view with my friend Ellie and our whole surroundings just didn't exist for a while. It was a really amazing experience but in a more relevant sense she just has a really beautiful voice which I can't get enough of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BucfErwPTWs City & Colour - The Death of Me Quite a famous song but one I believe should be shared nonetheless. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dO6PzzkrLwQ Edit: Yann Tiersen - comptine d'un autre ete l'apres midi I also had to add this after seeing "Amelie" had joined the forums. One of my favourite pieces of music with a really moving video to match. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZJDNSp1QJA
