Radical Face-inspired creations

So I was really enjoying the discussion on the Q&A thread and felt like creating a little sketch to map out The Roots. Songs from that character's perspective are next to their "root" and a little lyric that describes each of them. It's probably not accurate since I took a couple guesses, but it was fun for me to do and I thought I'd share.

Anyone else have any Radical Face inspired art/sketches/diagrams to share?

Oh wow! Aimee, this is actually pretty cool. It certainly set's a visual to the album. I do like the little quotations at the ends of the root lines from each character songs. I'll look at it further, and let you know if I see any hicccups.

    -great job

Aww nice! Thats really cool. I also did a little family tree sketch to try and get my head around who was related to who, but mine was just lines and boxes, nothing like this lovely design :)

I looks all correct to me. I'm not sure if you had the same problem, but I didn't really know where to put Virgil. Ben said he was Stone's cousin but not from which side of the family.

Whoa. That's great! Thank you for making and sharing that.

Thanks everyone for liking my little doodle. :)

hughesypf, yeah I took a guess on Virgil from the cousin information. I take it there's likely a lot of family members we don't know about, but since William was the only other apparently sibling, Virgil got stuck there!

It's interesting how fun it is to try to piece together even a fictional family... Ben, you've really tapped into something central to human nature where a lot of art just scratches the surface. Thank YOU!

It's nice hearing that other folks find this stuff interesting. I've always been kinda fascinated by the topic, and I'd have made it anyway, but it's still a fun thing to hear.

This is amazing, it helps with imagery of the family so much. I've put this up on facebook for all the world (well all my radical face listening friends) to see :D! Is there a possibility of releasing any of your notes or a full background with The Branches?
  8. ben Administrator

Yeah, I plan to put up more notes as I go. I'm gonna show more from this first record soon. I'm just behind on everything lately.

    Looking forward to it :)

I listen to Radical Face while drawing all the time. A bunch of it has seeped into my art to be certain.
I used Doorways to test Corel's video software. I'm not terribly fond of the way the video turned out (and thus did not buy the software, stick with Adobe!)

    But here it is anyway.

I actually have a picture book coming out in spring called Baby Bear Eats the Night. While I hadn't yet heard of Ben's music when I wrote the story, I did hear Radical Face on Pandora around the same time I signed my contract. Was it the Universe speaking toward impossible images in words and music? I'd like to think so.

I really liked the sound work on that, you managed to sync it really well with the video and it set exactly the right atmosphere. Turned my speakers right up for full effect :D

aw, thanks I appreciate that :) I can't wait to share another little video I'm working on to Ghost Towns, it's the first project I've had the free time to put together since I was in high school, and it's looking really awesome. I'm paying my respects to Ben and The Roots the whole way thru, hopefully I finished it soon, my little square profile picture is actually a screen capture from it. Shot it on top of this massive abandoned grain elevator in Columbus that overlooks the city and managed to get a perfect sunrise and sunset when I was up there. I was spotted by some cops down below, but I told them what I was doing and said I'd send them the finished video, and I talked my way out of any trouble haha. But the lyrics in Ghost Towns just hit so hard with my recent circumstances, I had just been cheated on by my 'dream girl' and laid off in the same week, so I was like, okay I have to film this, cuz I just wanted to go where no one knew me and I listen to that song for a minute, and show my take on the song since it definitely helped me through. I honestly want to help Ben and the guys shoot a video so bad at some point, so hopefully my work crosses state lines a bit, cuz I'm just tucked away and stuck in Columbus this winter, its brutal

That's wonderous! I thought about making a little mind map of the family, but I have to say that this is certainly better than anything I could do! So I don't have a diagram of my own to share, and this is purely conjecture, but I thought that Victoria would be the girl described in the dead waltz, as in the severus and stone story, it says that their mother has some special abilities of a sort. Also, in the moon is down, the narrator (Tom) says that "all my life I've watched you dance along", like how she dances with the dead. I think.

He carries on to say "to music, that I can't hear". I think it means that the way her mind works is beyond him, "I ain't equipped to hear those songs".

Thank you for sharing, everyone. It's really great to see all these. If I can ever be some part of inspiring other people to make things themselves, I consider it one of the best possible compliments. Because once upon a time, some artists did the same for me (and still do to this day), and it's awesome to think I could pass that along too.

Absolutely Ben, music drives my work, and the music and lyrics you put out definitely take my ideas to whole other levels. I've really liked all the videos you've put out. Especially Ugly Life. I kept looking for the audio because I really like it acoustic, but I think you only put that guy on a release in Japan, and iTunes doesn't let me buy it when I go to Japan's store unfortunately. You should stick that on a future E.P record as a b-side or something

I'm wasn't 100% percent sure where to put this, but I found this incredibly well done gem on YouTube and I haven't seen it here yet:

I always had this great video idea for "Wrapped in Piano Strings"
Since I live in southern Wisconsin, the summers are always bright and green. The song always makes me feel warm and I always hike and run around the bluffs and rolling hills during the summer. The idea was for someone to be holding a handful of balloons, while it shows the person in various locations near my hometown, as they cut through woods, walk on the bluffs, through pines of Devils Lake, and on the vibrant green bluffs I drive through on my ways to work. Where it picks up in the song, especially where Ben sings, "Up in the air" have the person release a balloon or two into the sky in these various locations.
I would love to do this project but I need to gather everything and wait for the cold months to pass. It would be exciting to put together!
