I can put up a tutorial for Winter Is Coming as well. There's definitely a bit of reaching in that one. It's played a little odd. I'll film Deserter's Song and Winter Is Coming in my next session. Probably tomorrow. And I don't mean to say I'm a poor guitarist. I can play fairly well. I just know some folks who are genuinely great at their instruments, and I'm well aware of the difference. Hanging around some of my friends in the Orchestra is pretty humbling. I spend a lot more time writing than I do practicing, though. I play everyday, but it's usually to work out some new section, not to specifically improve at my playing. Mandolin and Autoharp are the next two instruments I'd like to pick up. I'll look into the octave one, though. I definitely like the sound of them.
How about a piano tutorial for Welcome Home Reprise? Or if Ben doesn't fancy playing piano for us, maybe someone can write the sheet music? I'm not piano player myself, just mess about with it sometimes and would love to play this!
My brother played that piano. I'd have to ask him. I can play simple stuff, but I'm not much on piano. Nope. I'll add it to the list. Though it's as much piano as guitar, so I'll have to come up with a way to show that one.
I was a bit curious about Sad Business from Patients. I got really into that song this summer and tried to figure out the chords by ear. I had it on the 4th or 5th fret capo and was playing a g/c back and forth. However I recently tried playing it no capo going back and forth between C and F and Aminor (with the subtle variations as played in the recording). This sounded right to me, but then i played it with the record and it was out of key. This leads me to believe you were a half step down from standard tuning. Is this correct?
in one of his tutorial videos, ben mentioned that he keeps all his guitars a half step down because he's more comfortable singing that way.
Yeah, I'm tuned down a half step. It's a very C, F, G and Am kind of song, just in that lower tuning. Oh, and I'll have some new tutorials up pretty soon. I'm just shy on free time lately.
Many thanks Ben. Alice, my 12yr old daughter landed back from school today with a bright pink guitar that is so out of tune it sounds like a strangled cat! She's listened to welcome home and wants to play it. Quote " Dad, how do you tune a guitar?" answer........... hang on I'll goggle it !
Yeah, google is the way to go. Or youtube. Or you can just buy one of those little digital tuners that'll just tell you whether you're on or not. Any will work.
On Welcome Home - Ben didn't mention the chords for the "And I don't know if I can..." section. They are C G D D. Played how he does in the tutorial (as opposed to live), I only play the bottom 3 strings for C and G then the bottom 4 for the D. (Bottom by pitch; technically top by location). For the curious. In "Wrapped in Piano Strings" near the end of the "I fell into the sea...but you knew them all" part, the transitional guitar on the D chord isn't too hard and adds greatly to the song. Does anyone want me to post a small tutorial? I can't do video because I just had nose surgery but I wouldn't mind writing it up. Now I don't mean to push, Ben, I know you're realllly busy with the new album/label/etc. (by the way it is nice to see you growing your music and also it is awesome), I was just wondering about those tutorials - did you ever get around to filming them? If you'd like someone to edit the raw footage to finish it and clean it up or whatnot I'd be happy to do so. In addition if you could supply the raw audio for the Welcome Home tutorial I'd love to give it a run through The Amazing Slow Downer to tune it up a half-step then re-mux it with the current video, so people don't have to change their whole practice routine to learn it. I can do it with the compressed audio but it isn't quite as good. Do I have your permission to do so? Would you like to see how it comes out? It's pretty decent. Finally on the subject of guitar tuning, on my iPad I use Guitar Toolkit Pro and believe it or not it is the most accurate tuner I have used next to a rack-mounted one, it beats the crap out of even the decently expensive foot pedal tuners, and just uses the mic. Also, there's TUNER_E, http://www1.ocn.ne.jp/~tuner/tuner_e.html, free software, meant for making shakuhachi flutes but will tune any instrument, works as long as you have a mic on your computer.
Hi Ben, Found this online somewhere - I think this is mostly right, but I hear some variations of chords in the recording I think.... like on the last F in the verses? I'm pretty sure there are more chords to the outro as well? Thanks. Hey Ben, I've been having some troubles figuring out the piano parts in Family Portrait and Ghost Towns and I know you don't want to do piano tutorials so I was wondering if you could tab out the melodies for guitar? Then I could just move them over to piano. I'm mostly just interested in Family Portraits so a regular guitar tutorial would be awesome as well!! Also, I gotta say I'm a huge fan (but who here isn't? haha) I can't wait to hear the future masterpieces you put out!
I just bought myself an accordion, and I was wondering if you could do a tutorial for Always Gold or Ghost Towns on accordion. I would try to figure it out by ear because it sounds fairly simple, but I'm not very good at that... lol. Thanks!
Hey, I figured out the tab for We're On Our Way if anyone wants it. I posted them in the comments here: http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/r/r...ur_way_crd.htm?rated&view_on&corr#com_4767119
Nice one! I tried to submit my tab for the intro a while ago but it wasn't accepted, yours is all fancy with slides though. I'm lazy so I play all the notes after fifth fret on the B string for ease of access.
Thank you. And I totally understand being lazy that way haha. I also made the Sheet music to the dead waltz here: http://www.noteflight.com/scores/view/5c431359eb1cf70a013a11b84167540339cd6691 I'm only at the halfway point where the song changes though. And I didn't include pedaling instructions, but if you pedal at each bass note it should sound fine.
