Ah, thanks. That's a big compliment for me. I always really liked albums where it was more than just a collection of songs. So that's what I try to make. Cool to hear that it works out sometimes.
Yeah, that song's grim. Not totally sure what got into me with that one. When I played it for my sister, she said "That's really pretty, and I don't ever want to hear it again." Hahaha. But for the lyrics: I got a little story that I'd like to tell about a boy named Bishop who lived atop this hill people called him a slow boy, said he weren't all there but he never harmed none, no, he wouldn't dare but when the neighbor's daughter said the child was his oh, the people turned then and wanted blood for his sin Bishop tried to tell them that none had shared his bed but the words escaped him; he found tears instead well, his father begged then, for him to bend his knee that they might be lenient, in time would set him free but the boy just stood there with a steady gaze said they'd have to break him, 'cause bending weren't his way then they came and took him and dragged him off in chains and with the town as witness, he was forced to pay weren't 'til he was gone that the girl cleared his name now his ghost still haunts us to this very day
I don't know if this makes me awkward or awesome, but I printed out the PDFs of all the lyrics and read it over in my free time. So far, it's kept me company in hospital waiting rooms and while waiting for trains. Bravo.
It makes you awesome. Hahaha. I spend a lot of time on lyrics. It's the slowest part of record making for me. So it's fun when people appreciate 'em.
Haha... Thank you for the vote of confidence (and for not calling me out as awkward in a public forum). As a fan, that's always interesting to hear about the writing process. When I write, I put a lot of pressure on myself but I don't have all the layers of songwriting involved. Long story short, it is much appreciated!
It's not awkward. I realize it's awkward to express it sometimes (I've done it myself, so I know) but it's nice to receive it. But I can say that the most difficult part of lyrics for me is not so much the layers, but the limited space and strict syllables. It's trying to get a sentiment into those specific, and often very small, shapes that is the real struggle. So many things work fine on paper but sound silly or awkward when you sing them. It's usually a lot of rewrites solely to get the words into a state that isn't embarrassing to sing.
We're on our way just became one of my favourite songs after listening to it with the lyrics. Lyrically I like it so much because I personally take the same meaning from it as Always Gold which gives me the biggest smile every time I listen to it.
For the lyrics he just posted a live acoustic version of the song on YouTube. Here they are Lyrics: I got a little story that I'd like to tell about a boy named bishop, who lived atop this hill people called him a slow boy, said he weren't all there but he never harmed none, no, he wouldn't dare but when the neighbor's daughter said the child was his well, the people turned then and wanted blood for his sins bishop tried to tell them that none had shared his bed but the words escaped him; he found tears instead well his father begged then for him to bend his knee that they might be lenient, in time would set him free but the boy just stood there with a steady gaze and said they'd have to break him, 'cause bending weren't his way so they came and took him, and dragged him off in chains and with the town as witness, he was forced to pay it weren't 'til he was gone that the girl cleared his name and now his ghost still haunts us to this very day The video is here as well: By the way loven the song first time hearing it as well. Nice glasses Ben reminds me of my father's haha
Thank you very much for posting, it's the first time I've seen it. It's such a nice song, I was so captivated by seeing him perform it as well. I haven't been through it with the lyrics yet but I shall soon after I do the customary share with all my radical face listening friends
Thank Ben not me, I am just a helping hand! He is the reason I sleep at night even though it sounds a little creepy. Thank you again Ben
Hahaha, yeah. Those are my old man glasses. I dress like an old man in general. Or a bum. Not much else works for me. Glad you like the acoustic version. I'm gonna do a series of them like that, in various locations, just playing songs on guitar and singing. Might shoot a couple while I'm out on tour, but definitely when I get back.
Hahaha no definitely not a bum or an old man, more like a Ben Cooper ! You look very similar to my dad, maybe because you have an almost bald head, Glasses, and a manly beard!! I am pretty sure all of us humble supporters and fans would really appreciate it if you have the time!! I for one will superbly enjoy the music and videos! Grazie my good sir!
I was thinking exactly that, in the most awesome way possible. My Dad is a really amazing man, I always imagine Always Gold to be written from his perspective.
Ha! Thanks for posting that video, cause I would have never known. I'm not sure if Ben ever plans to play that song at live shows, since his sister (who I think Manages) requests never to have it played infront of her again. Hehe. Thanks!
Hahaha I was thinking the same thing!! I am surprised I haven't heard this song before is there a place to buy it? iTunes doesn't have it and I am not sure if Ben has put it on an album, because of what his sister said haha. It's all good though because I can enjoy this exclusive video from him. ) Gabbers I know what you mean, many of Ben's song's relate to my life. That's why I deeply enjoy his music, his personality is amazing as well! If all I can say to him, it would be that he changed my view on life in better ways!
Wow. Thanks for all the kind words. It's super fun to think you can benefit other people's lives in some way. And I'm glad I look like everyone's dad. Hahaha.
Haha I was thinking that it sounded bad but I want to assure you that he is everything I love about the world. He spends his evenings in a cottage in a little English village sitting in front of the fire with his dog on his lap, choosing not to switch on the electric lights because he prefers candles. I would struggle to pay you a greater compliment
Oh wow your father seems like a great man. Some one I wouldn't mind being like growing up. Just enjoying my comfy self and those around me! You deserve it, you never cease to amaze me and all of us in general! Well, that is what I would assume. Indeed you amaze me though! Hahaha it makes it easier to relate to I would say, following on looking like our fathers that is. You seem like the very most modest person, but inside you have very diverse opinions; that is what I think separates you from many other people!
