I lift 3 nights a week, about 2 hours a session. I got into strength training/powerlifting almost 3 years ago now. I started just to help with my insomnia, and to work on correcting my back problems. Turned out, I liked it a lot and I've stuck with it since. Began with a routine called "Starting Strength" (really good book on form) and just went from there. Beyond that, I like to swim (I jump in the ocean a couple days a week and swim laps) and ride my bike. I can't stand running, though. Hahaha. I'll usually do anything else to avoid it.

But I grew up skating. I was really into it as a teenager until I hurt myself. I recently gave a lot of music to an independent video maker for this film "A Happy Medium 2." Here's a trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geax0d0QLgA

oh sweet man, yeah im at the gym bout that much im fairly tall and solid enough(well i think) so when im there i stick to pull ups chin up bench biceps and yeah mostly chest and anything involving using my own body strength , hate squats and anything leg involved, my gym has a good lap pool but while its cold(weather) i run bout 8-12kms twice a week(i'll swim in summer) ... some how hoping to keep it up when im over your way just gonna hit runs and whateva gym i find

yeah tore my medial ligament coming out of a mini half one night actually took a piece of bone with it, docs were pretty impressed with xray so yeah now i just bodyboard and wakeboard i feel im safer in water, can't really afford to be injured skating for work these days

good morning hypocrite, ten thousand lines, we were never built to last and safe and sound have all made my "running" playlist

I use the laboratory mouse set of fitness rules.

It's a proven fact that a mouse has a set number of heartbeats in it's lifetime.

If you put it on a running wheel it's heartbeat speed is increased, therefore reducing it's lifespan

If you put it in a comfy chair, with a glass of whiskey listening to music, it's heart rate decreases, therefore increasing it's lifespan.

I plan to live a long, long time. Bring another glass of whiskey and turn up the volume :)

I started hitting the gym a little over a year ago.
I love it, perfect way to relieve stress and makes you feel better overall.
I have 2 different workout days and am at the gym roughly 3 or 4 times a week. I work biceps and chest together. For chest I benchpress, incline bench press, and decline bench press, and then to finish off I do some decline flies. For arms I do curls, then concentration curls, and usually finish with a ladder.
Then my next day I work shoulders, back, and triceps. Ben actually started me on dead lifts and wow have I seen a difference! They are awesome, helped me gain a couple pounds and actually even helps to improve my poster. I usually do rows after and finish with pull downs. For shoulders I do a lot of different varied exercises, put 2 really good ones are military press and shrugs. Then for triceps I like to do extended skull crushers, extensions, and pressdown.
I do abs with every workout and usually do a 5 minute workout. It's pretty intense. You do one minute of each exercise without taking breaks. Start with normal crunches, then move to side crunches, do both sides, then leg raises, and finish with a plank. It hurts a lot haha
Cardio wise I don't really have a strict schedule, but as a swim instructor I do a lot of swimming which is always good and I like to run 3 or 4 times a week. Although I don't usually run that much haha that would just be ideal.
And I don't do any leg workouts, I know I should, I just hate them so much haha

i just ran a 12km race in my city , i didnt win out of the 40,000 runners but i think i definately did it in under an hour, looking forward to tomorrows session to see how i pull up and recoverys in the spa ha, yeah arms and chest for me tomorrow, my PT could never get me to do the dead lifts right so i gave up with that and use a machine at the gym to work my back etc

Yeah, deadlifts are great. I can't go too much over 275 lbs because of my back (it gets risky after that), so I can't get as much out of them as I like. Same for squats. I have to keep them lighter and supplement. But both are great exercises.

I've been so busy getting this release together that my lifting has slipped. I can only make it two nights a week lately. But I'm gonna pick up a lot in Winter. I want to break 300 on bench before the end of the year. I'm 15 pounds away currently, so I think I can do it.

I've been thinking about learning to box as well. There's a boxing gym near me, and I've wanted to learn for a long time now. Not worried about sparring. I'd just like to know how to work a heavy and speed bag properly.

boxing , you walk in thinking your fairly fit till the instructor makes you hit the bag for a full 2 minute round ,

300 pounds!! thats like double on what i lift you absolute bear machine! i felt that pun was required ..

well i'm hitting your country in 5 weeks and well i'm hoping my training doesn't suffer too badly, running and push ups then finding gyms and saunas wherever humanly possible,

Well, to be fair, I'm kinda heavy. I weigh 225, and the weight definitely makes it easier. If I drop even 5 pounds, the lifts are a lot harder. Minus pull ups and dips, or body weight exercises.

I'm definitely not in shape to box. But that's kind of the idea. I've gotten a lot stronger, but I'd like to get into better shape again as well. Boxing seems like a fun way to do that.

I used to be an elite fencer when I was in high school (or, at least, a fencer with elite aspirations), but I sort of gradually slipped away from that. Now I barely fence at all. When I did I ran 3-4 times a week and went to the gym 1-2 times, on top of fencing sessions every day. I much prefer to do something rather than just exercise for the sake of exercise. Sure, a run can feel good and nice and all, but it isn't half as stimulating as sporting in some fashion.
It can go from facing the world's best in fencing all the way down to a friendly soccer game with your pals, I just think it's all great fun. It allows me to shift my focus from life, the universe and everything to just one specific activity. Running or going to the gym can't do that for me. And I also like competing :)

Now I've just started aikido, as well. It's really fun.

ahhh fair enough im 202 in your lingo , but im defs working towards pulling my own bodyweight for sure, wide grips and chin ups , diamond push ups, dips etc and boxing will help your fitness so much, just be prepared for your entire body to be in pain for a few days ,

fencing seems fun, yet australia doesn't really give us exposure to the sport, 2012 im looking to start with a Lacrosse side, mainly cos i've never played and it looks like ice hockey on grass and well i dont get much ice in my area ... theres an adventure quadathlon in WA where i live involving swim 2km,cross country 13km, mountain bike 32km and kayak 16km thats my goal for 2014 to compete in this event

Yeah, that's one reason I actually enjoyed strength training. It's very goal oriented. And every time you come back, it's an attempt to lift an amount you've never done before. The challenge keeps it interesting. It's sometimes a lot of planning, though.

And fencing always seemed interesting to me. Just the amount of form that goes into it is really something. I saw a mini-doc on it a couple years ago that helped it make a lot more sense to someone who's never done it.

dude, shouldnt u be asleep! yeah i know what you mean, im bout to put my weight up to 80kgs for benching which im stoked with cos 70 is getting to a comfortable stage, i train alone tho so never have anyone to spot me unless i see one of my mates, do you use free weights or that supported benching/squat machine?
  14. ben Administrator

Hahaha. I'm up pretty late most nights. I do most of my recording, and creative work in general, between 11pm and 6 am. I'm just now winding down.

But I do everything with free weights. I only use machines if I'm dealing with an injury. But I lift with two of my brothers, so I almost always have a spot.
  15. Regan King Member

your lucky to have brothers man ! i been going at it 10 months now like properly and still learning so much actually a head spin doing it right an all that, slowly getting a free weights set up but my local gym is so close its almost pointless, i want a decent mountain bike too perth has some pretty rad hill courses and everything is close by, jacksonville is probably bigger

Boxing looks awesome! I want to do it the way you do Ben, I want to learn the sport and get my cardio back up, wouldn't be too interested in sparring. I'm actually starting this fall when school picks up. There's actually boxing lessons offered at my university and it's only $60 for the entire semester so I can't not do it haha also seems like a good way to work off stress as weightlifting does. I also only use free weights. I really don't like machines and I'm lucky enough to have a small group of friends that also hit the gym so I have a spot 9 times out of ten. My goal is to be at 2 plates by the end of the year. I guess that'd be 225 pounds. I'm comfortable at 185 right now so if I train hard I can do it. I weigh 160 currently. I've gone up ten pounds since last year, but I can't seem to break the 160 barrier. My ideal weight is 175, got a while to go haha.
Out of curiosity what's everyone's view on weight gainers and have any tried them? I want to start, but I'm scared all the weight will go to my stomach which I definitely don't want.
  17. Regan King Member

i was 6'3 and 104 kgs, but unfit as hell , im 91kgs now back to my weight im happy with so i've never needed to gain kg's

sparring is the best part of boxing ! i mean its relatively safe etc unless u spar someone whos well above your skill then your pretty much in for a good rough up

all my mates get on the protein shakes etc , but i always forget to drink it before i go , can't say if they work well or not ha
  18. Regan King Member

i got drunk the other night and Busted my shoulder ten pin bowling the other night, powerlifting has been put on a backburner for a while :(
  19. ben Administrator

Yeah, injuries are the worst. I hurt my wrist and elbow earlier in the year, and I could only had a handful of exercises for a good month or so. Definitely take enough time to make sure you heal properly. It's not worth damaging things even more just to get back a week earlier.
  20. Regan King Member

yeah cardio legs and abs, all the joyous things :/
