Hullo people does anyone have any advice for festivals this year in England? I'm quite new to this and I thought where better to get a few pointers in the direction of music I'm going to like and a good atmosphere :) Thankya in advance.

I've never been to any in England, but for some general rules (assuming this is an outdoor affair) ...

Pace yourself. Drink a lot of water. Get enough sleep. Eat enough, and as well as you can. Wear sunscreen. Bring insect repellent. Pack extra socks.

It's easy to get exhausted, so just be careful of that. Otherwise, just enjoy yourself.

From someone who's lived and England and been to it's festivals - I'd place a raincoat and wellingtons well before sunscreen and insect repellent ;-)

As for the festivals - Bestival at the Isle of Wight, is a really warm and friendly festival, with an excellent vibe. And Sigur Rós is playing this year!!!!!!!!!

The Big Chill is also recommended, with a great atmosphere. And of course there are the big ones, like Glastonbury and Leeds/Reading

My music choice is a bit too indie for the bigguns to be honest :p I've been looking a lot at Boomtown which I'd love to go to just for the Old Town but seeing Sigur Ros would be amazing. Thanks for the advice and you're not wrong about the wellies :p

Ah, right. I forgot the location. Hahaha. Well, let's just label it as "prepare for the elements."

And I have missed seeing Sigur Ros 3 times in my life so far, as well as Jonsi. I'm determined to see them at least once.

I don't like festivals, being surrounded by 50,000 people in a field kinda freaks me out....

So in that regard, the only festival I could ever recommend would be All Tomorrow's Parties :D It takes place at a holiday camp, with no need to sleep in a tent because there are chalets (although there are facilities for camping if you wish, but who would want to with a comfy bed, hot shower, kitchen facilities and TV available in a chalet? OK just me then....), and the lineup is usually really good. This year's is being curated by Jeff Mangum, details here: http://www.atpfestival.com/events/jeffmangum.php

The one ATP festival I went to many years ago was brilliant, it was curated by the band Tortoise, and because our booking got mixed up my friends and I got to stay in a VIP chalet for the weekend, with aforementioned comfy bed, kitchen, TV and bathroom. What can I say, I like my home comforts hahaha.

The only festival in England I've ever attended is The Great Escape in 2008. It was a lot of fun, Brighton is nice place to stay. The festival takes place all around the city, it kind of takes over for 3 days. You can just sleep in a hotel/hostel instead of camping, which I like a lot haha.
Other great festivals in Europe are Pukkelpop in Belgium and Haldern in Germany. Haldern is a pretty small festival with only 2 stages, which is a good thing, cause then you can see almost everything that's playing. The line-up is mostly smaller, upcoming bands, which is always nice. I saw Villagers there for the first time when I hadn't heard of them yet, they blew me away. The other amazing act I saw there was The Whale Watching Tour, it's a collaboration between 4 or 5 totally different but amazing artists (classical, folk and electronic) Too bad they only did a tour and never released a record together. The festival has a relaxed atmosphere.

Will it be your first time going to a festival? I've also heard good things about the big chill, but never been there. All I can say about that (from what I've heard) watch out with drugs haha

Please, go see Sigur Ros and Jonsi when you can! I've seen both, and it's an amazing experience!
